Crytek has announced today via their blog that they have released their virtual reality tech demo “Back to Dinosaur Island” as a free download via Steam. Anyone with an Oculus Rift DK2 Dev kit can download the demo, which is only available for PC (Win 7, 8 & 10) and get the full on, in your face dinosaur experience.
According to Crytek’s Director of Production, David Bowman:
“Back to Dinosaur Island shows how intense, involving and rich virtual reality can be. Players will see a powerful dinosaur breathing inches from their face, getting an unprecedented sense of its immense scale. To watch this scene in 2D is impressive, but when you’re in virtual reality, it becomes more intimate, and more exciting – giving you a feeling of presence and a belief that you’re really right there in a way that no other medium can.”
Crytek previewed the demo earlier this year at GDC 2015 and their first virtual reality game “Robinson: The Journey” has been announced for Playstation VR. No release date yet.
Unfortunately, as it seems to be my usual experience with Steam, I can’t seem to get it to connect to the server to download the app, so I will have to do a review when it connects. In the meantime, if you can connect, enjoy!
