One of the biggest problems with using current Samsung mobile phones with Gear VR Headsets is overheating. I can’t tell you how many times I have been deep into a game of Gunjack, only to receive an overheating warning and had to quit.
A guy named Petr emailed me today with an interesting solution to the problem. He has a new startup project called 6FREEZE, which is an aluminum air cooler that fits on to the back of your Galaxy S6. It can then be inserted into the Gear VR headset and acts as a heat distributor to help keep your phone cool.
The video below shows a demonstration.
The device is made from aluminium and weights only 70grams. The size is slightly lower than the size of the Samsung S6, 138 x 67 mm. According to Petr, the device by itself will increase play time by 50%. If Thermal Paste is used, it increases by 100%.
The only caveat to this product is that it is probably only for hardcore users who, ideally, have a dedicated “VR only” device. Installation requires you to remove the metal back plate on your phone (not super easy to do) and replace it with the 6FREEZE backplate. If you love your Galaxy S6 as much as I do, I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you are more on the daring side of things with your phone, go for it!
To learn how to remove the back from your Samsung Galaxy S6, here’s a video that shows how to do it.
While the product is not yet for sale, if you are interested in learing more about the 6FREEZE, you can check out the facebook page where you can contact them directly.
